HIV Alliance Education and Outreach VISTA

Oregon Health Authority AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project

About the organization

The Oregon Health Authority AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project aims to alleviate, prevent and reduce poverty by engaging new public health professionals in a year of full-time service in major public health organizations to create or expand public health systems capacity. The project aims to reduce poverty in our communities by building sustainable public health programs and systems that ensure health equity, community resiliency and improved health outcomes.

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 50 years.

In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year.

HIV Alliance’s Education Program strives to help prevent new HIV and Hepatitis C infections through audience –tailored educational presentations and at-risk educational outreach. Specifically, HIV Alliance’s Education Program achieves its mission by presenting HIV/HCV education to middle and high school age youth, youth in treatment and corrections, and LGBTQ+ and Latinx youth groups in Lane, Marion, and Douglas Counties where communicating HIV and Hepatitis C information is not only important, but also necessary within Oregon’s mandated education curriculum.

The AmeriCorps member will improve HIV Alliance’s engagement of youth living in poverty in Lane, Douglas, and Marion Counties by conducting outreach to educators serving youth living in poverty, low-income LGBTQ+, Latinx, and detainee youth to connect them with Positively Speaking Bureau speakers; develop culturally relevant materials and presentations specifically for LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities of low socioeconomic status; participate directly with efforts to prevent opioid addiction and reduce risks for people who inject drugs through outreach and as part of HIV Alliance’s Lane County Harm Reduction Coalition; and help to sustain and expand our programs by assisting with grant writing so that we can ensure that we are meeting the needs of our clients.
