The trails crew will be working with a forest trails leadership team to create a “Center Of Excellence” in wilderness and non-wilderness trails skills and conduct the trail work of the 1800 mile trail system of the Gila National Forest.
The Gila trails team will have their home in southern New Mexico working in the nations’ first wilderness area, the Gila Wilderness.
GS-0462-4 Forest Trails Crew Overview: The forest trails crew will be full time members of the Gila Forest trails team, working to provide backcountry and front country trails maintenance as well as developing a Center of Excellence in trails maintenance techniques and skills for partners and others working on trails. This includes motorized trails. Team members will learn to work with trails tools, equipment, livestock and machinery, as well as develop skills to become adept at working in remote environments. The Gila trails work will serve to ensure protection of wildlife habitat and water quality in addition to improving recreational access to forest lands. This crew will also help with the planning of project logistics associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, including working with backcountry packstock. Possible promotion potential to GS-05.
Most will qualify with credit obtained at university - please attach transcripts. Experience and readiness for this trails work is essential.
