About the organization
The mission of the Indian Health Service (IHS) is to raise the health status of the American Indian and Alaska Native people to the highest possible level. To carry out this mission, the IHS provides comprehensive primary health care and disease prevention services. The Sanitation Facilities Construction (SFC) Program is the environmental engineering component of the IHS health delivery system. To support the IHS mission, the SFC Program provides technical and financial assistance to American Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages for cooperative development and construction of safe water, wastewater, and solid waste systems and related support facilities.
The Division of Sanitation Facilities Construction in the Bemidji Area of the Indian Health Service is seeking civil/environmental engineers for a positions in Bemidji, Minnesota, Ashland, Wisconsin, and Sault St. Marie, Michigan. We assist under-served tribal reservations throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan with water and wastewater infrastructure in order to enhance their public health status. This position is a great fit for individuals who want use their engineering education for public service.
New engineers with IHS have the unique opportunity of being involved in all aspects of construction projects from beginning-to-end, including surveying, pilot studies, design, regulations, contracting, and project management. Junior engineers gain experience in several fields of study including hydraulic, geotechnical, hydrogeology, CAD, and construction.
The Bemidji Area offices currently have three entry-level position available. Engineers with the Indian Health Service are federal “GS” employees and enjoy generous benefits and career progression. With some restrictions, the Indian Health Service also has the unique ability to hire career positions as officers in the US Public Health Service. This enables employees to be hired with all the benefits of active-duty uniformed service members. Both hiring plans include distinct health coverage, retirement benefits, and leave options.
