English as a Foriegn Language Teacher

Universidad Tecnológica de la Mixteca

About the organization

The Universidad Tecnologica de la Mixteca (UTM) is the flagship university in the SUNEO system of public universities in the state of Oaxaca, and is considered one of the leading institutions in southern Mexico. Our language institute is a friendly, supportive and professional workplace comprised of language instructors of different nationalities and educational backgrounds. Aside from providing quality instruction to students, the department focuses on both professional and community development and we are looking for motivated, self-starters who are willing to participate in projects outside of classes.

Teach English to undergraduate students from A1 to C1 level. Working hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. These are typical working hours in Mexico, and most university employees return home for their two-hour lunch or have lunch at one of the many eateries near the university. Each teacher is responsible for between three and five classes a day. Classes meet daily for 50 minutes and class size ranges from 20 to 40 students. Teachers follow a set syllabus for each level, and give departmental partial and final exams.

Teachers also hold office hours for students who need extra help. The remainder of the workday is devoted to lesson-planning and program development, homework marking or other departmental projects.

Successful applicants will be native speakers with a B.A. + CELTA, or equivalent, or an M.A. in a relevant field and will have classroom teaching experience. A Bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement for teaching at the university level in Mexico, so we cannot consider applicants who do not have a Bachelor´s degree. Specific TESL/TEFL training is also a requirement of the university’s Academic Council. Although it is not a requirement, ability and training in Spanish or another foreign language is seen as a definite plus.
