Elementary School Literacy Tutor

Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps Program

About the organization

Iowa Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to help ensure that all Iowa students are on track to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. This AmeriCorps position addresses specific unmet community needs related to early literacy and academic achievement. In Iowa, nearly 20 percent of 3rd grade students do not read proficiently at grade level. This number rises to nearly 35 percent for students of low socioeconomic status. These numbers are staggering when we consider what they imply for the future success of these children ― students who are not reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school than their grade level peers.

Duties

Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps Program members are trained as Elementary School Literacy Tutors and are placed in school districts throughout Iowa. Members are assigned to one site for the duration of the program year and serve an average of 40 hours per week.

Corps members work one-on-one with students in kindergarten through 3rd grade who need help learning to read. During the summer months, members partner with local groups to recruit volunteers and support community engagement by providing literacy activities at summer food service programs, assisting with summer tutoring programs, and/or coordinating children's summer literacy programs at local libraries.

The next term of service will start Sept. 3, 2019 and conclude Aug. 31, 2020. Full-time members will earn a stipend of $14,000 for twelve months of service, paid in twice monthly paychecks before taxes.

After successfully completing your term, full-time members receive an education award of $6,095. That can be used to pay for tuition at institutions of higher education or to pay back qualified student loans. Full-time members qualify for childcare and health insurance.

AmeriCorps members can place qualified student loans into forbearance and have all or a portion of the interest that accrued on them paid off after they successfully complete their terms.
