About the organization
AmeriCorps is a national service program that partners with non-profit agencies to meet the critical needs of communities. The American Red Cross hosts state-wide AmeriCorps programs in California that focus on educating communities on emergency readiness and assisting those who have been affected by disasters. We are looking for passionate individuals who want to make a significant impact on others and gain professional experience in a meaningful way.
The AmeriCorps members who serve in the Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) department will assist their local territories with the development and the growth of our disaster services program. Members will be working both in the office and field, in coordination with Red Cross volunteers and staff gaining valuable community engagement, disaster response, and community education experience.
upport the preparedness of community members, particularly under-served populations, through the facilitation and delivery of preparedness training and Sound the Alarm events
Assist with the promotion and outreach of preparedness education to targeted community groups such as non-profit groups, schools and senior centers
Recruit and train new volunteers and oversee existing volunteers who are engaged in disaster activities within their assigned territory.
Serve as a point of contact for partner agencies, connecting the organizations with services offered through the Red Cross, such as disaster education trainings
Respond to local emergencies as an active member of the Disaster Action Team (DAT) and/or the Casework and Recovery teams to support the recovery of community members who have been affected by disasters such as home fires and other local emergencies
As a Disaster Responder, members will be expected to be on-call for multiple 12-hour shifts each week and various weekends throughout their term of service.
Deliver CPR/First Aid certification trainings to vulnerable populations
Must be able to serve approx. 40 hours per week, from 09/14/2020 to 07/23/2021
Minimum of 18 years old
Able to pass a criminal background check
Holds a High School Diploma or General GED
Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
Possess a valid driver’s license
Applicants who currently reside outside of California should be prepared to relocate, if selected for the position
Ability to serve outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends
Comfortable with public speaking
Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Flexible, self-motivated and adaptable to shifting priorities
Leadership and problem-solving skills
Experience working with volunteers
Bilingual language skills in Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Tagalog are not required, but highly desired
