About the organization
The Atlantic Council of the United States seeks a talented, entrepreneurial thinker and manager to help shape the work of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center (AALAC). The deputy director of strategy and outreach in AALAC will work with the Director to design and implement the Center’s strategy as well as lead its outreach strategy, which includes the center’s publications process and communications strategy. S/he must be a strong leader, innovative, nimble, and effective in developing partnerships with business, funders, and media. S/he will coordinate the work of a team of analysts and program managers, helping implement projects, mentor staff, and inspire initiatives. The deputy director of strategy and outreach must be a keen analyst of Latin America’s most urgent challenges and have background in how to turn ideas into action, an expert in engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including media, as well as have experience working and living in the region. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented, nimble in their approach to the job, and focused on innovating in how to achieve growth of AALAC.
AALAC addresses a wide range of topics, including economic and political development in Latin American nations, regional integration, trade, energy, democracy, and international relations between Latin America, the Unites States, China, and Europe. The successful candidate will have a strong record of initiating programs, excellent managerial and communication skills, and a proven ability to build networks among relevant leaders in public and private arenas.
The Deputy Director of Strategy and Outreach will have his/her own research interests and be able to carry out independent policy initiatives and writing projects; manage the center’s publications process and media outreach, including conceptualizing and implementing the communications strategy; represent the center, as needed, at conferences, with news media, and at speaking engagements, and in interactions with government officials and Council board members; think creatively about issues in the Latin America region and contribute to the design of programs and project proposals for fundraising; and excel at communication and collaboration within the Council and externally.
Strategic Planning: Work with the director, budget managers and program leads to develop and implement the strategic plan for AALAC. The center prioritizes a positive approach to addressing the region’s current and long-term opportunities and challenges and is dedicated to turning ideas into concrete, effective action.
Publications: Serve as senior editor of all AALAC publications. This includes being a partner with program leads in the conceptualization of publications, in providing feedback and edits to draft publications, and on ensuring that the final product is relevant, impact, and meets the high expectations (in terms of content and writing style) of the Atlantic Council. style.
Management: Support the director in the day-to-day management of the Center, especially its publications and outreach efforts. Implement the Center’s initiatives to influence policy and impact the public debate on a range of Latin American issues. She/he will oversee implementation of multiple projects simultaneously.
Intellectual Leadership: Play a leading role in developing the intellectual framework for advancing the Council’s mission and Latin American programming through written work, specific initiatives, and speaking opportunities within and outside the Council. Develop and maintain a profile as respected leader on select issues.
Strategic Outreach and Engagement: Coordinate development and implementation of community outreach and engagement strategies across a range of AC activities. Identify opportunities and develop and implement strategies to engage donors, decision-makers, local partners and the media, as well as other important stakeholders in events and activities. Represent the Center externally and internally, represent the Director as needed, and build expertise within the news media in areas where AALAC operates.
External Communication: In partnership with portfolio managers, develop and implement multifaceted communications and public relations strategies to support the goals and mission of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center and the Atlantic Council’s global strategic direction. Create and implement a calendar of international and globally-oriented communications, including press releases, op-ed articles, announcements, conferences, presentations, et al.
Talent Management: Assist the Director in managing and developing Center staff.
Fundraising: Undertake all aspects of specific project development, fundraising, and implementation.
A Master’s degree or the equivalent in a relevant field, with at least 8 years of relevant work experience.
Experience in program management and development in fast paced, innovative and/or entrepreneurial environment.
Demonstrated professional excellence and passion for working on Latin American issues with international experience highly preferred.
Significant knowledge of Latin American affairs and superior knowledge of the US government.
Strong and current network of contacts in business, government/politics, the media, civil society, and think tanks/academia.
A track record of working in and with business, in fundraising, and in event management/conference development, planning, and execution. An ability to focus on impact and results is important.
Superb interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collegially with others and with the highest standards of integrity.
Superior written and oral communication skills and a desire to experiment in outreach methods.
The ability to work quickly, with a collegial, resourceful, and entrepreneurial attitude is required.
Excellent English language writing and briefing skills, as well as proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese languages.
Ability to represent the Atlantic Council to external constituencies, including news media, Board members, individual and corporate members, senior business and government officials, diplomatic officials, VIPs, and donors.
