About the organization
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and its affiliate organization Friends in Global Health (FGH) supports the Mozambican Ministry of Health in the implementation of service, training, and research programs. In FY21 VUMC/FGH programs in Mozambique had an annual budget over $40 million and a team of over 2,300 employees based in multiple provinces across the country.
The Deputy Country Director will support the FGH Country Director through overall strategic leadership and management of FGH’s portfolio of programs in Mozambique, leading the Logistics, Procurement, IT, Human Resources, Infrastructure, Administration and Health management teams. This position will be responsible for day-to-day decisions for the FGH Operations.
The Deputy Country Director will participate in the development of new budgets and will support the operationalization of approved budgets, working closely with the FGH Finance Department and the Country Director to ensure compliance with sponsor funding rules and regulations. The Deputy Country Director will be leading the establishment of sub-agreements with Governmental or non-Governmental entities in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
This position will ensure FGH Policies and SOPs are updated in a timely manner and that all changes are effectively communicated to staff. The position will also work closely with the FGH Legal team to follow all legal cases through to resolution.
Effective communication between technical teams and the Operations teams will be essential.
This position will require regular travel to FGH supported provinces/districts in Mozambique to monitor quality of work, identify unmet needs and support staff.
Candidate must have an advanced degree, preferably a Master’s in Business Administration; must have a minimum of 10 years of experience working within a developing country context, of which a minimum of 5 years working with PEPFAR or other US Government funding; must have strong program planning, management and implementation skills (including the management of large implementation teams). Fluency in Portuguese and English, both verbal and in writing, is required. Mozambique experience preferred.
