About the organization

Join our current team of 16 AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) on the beautiful South Cumberland Plateau! Our VISTAs work to alleviate poverty by building capacity within community organizations that address issues of health, education, and economic development on the South Cumberland Plateau. Our VISTAs work in a variety of capacities including grant writing, fundraising, community organizing, and volunteer recruitment. Each of our positions offers the unique opportunity to work in a rural, economically depressed region of Tennessee. Through a partnership with South Cumberland Community Fund and the University of the South (Sewanee), the South Cumberland Plateau VISTA Project (SCPVP) provides training to enhance each VISTA member’s personal and professional development. This VISTA program is team focused, providing group programming, support, and social opportunities for each VISTA. Make a difference! Help us improve our South Cumberland Plateau communities.

Duties

Member Duties: For over 40 years, Mountain T.O.P. has thrived as a strategic community partner on the South Cumberland Plateau. Mountain T.O.P. focuses on activities such as reducing substandard housing, supporting lifelong learning and leadership, and promoting overall wellness. The VISTA member will leverage Mountain T.O.P.'s community partnerships to develop a case management system for connecting low-income residents to needed housing, social, medical and vocational services. This will include asset mapping, identifying gaps and under-utilized resources, researching alternative methods for addressing gaps, and creating a network for referrals. The member will develop management and tracking systems for referrals to the right resources, creating a “pipeline of services.” The member will identify funding sources and increase the number and effectiveness of partner collaborations, including local, regional and national entities, thus improving access to services for people living in poverty.

Qualifications

Desired Skills and Experience:

Comfort with computers/technology, strong verbal and written communication skills, writing/editing, education, social services, public health, community organization

This position permits school attendance and/or a second job in off-hours. Access to a car is highly recommended.
