About the organization

The St. Mary’s Nutrition Center (NC) brings people together to collectively imagine and build a just food system and healthy community. Located in the heart of downtown Lewiston, Maine, the NC works to make healthy, local food accessible and affordable; grow gardens and support local farmers; cultivate partnerships with young people; create opportunities to learn and share together; build vibrant neighborhoods and deepen connection between people, place, and the land. The NC’s partner, the Cooperative Development Institute (CDI) works to create cooperative businesses & networks that grow a prosperous, equitable economy. CDI is the lead developer of the Lewiston Community Food Center (CFC); a multi-million-dollar, groundbreaking project that will include a cooperatively run grocery store, commercial kitchen, & shared-use storage facility.
This position is part of Ending Hunger Corps, a cohort-model VISTA program sponsored by Maine's Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Forestry.

Duties

The VISTA will increase capacity of the CFC’s development & NC’s equitable food access initiatives -- the Lewiston Farmers’ Market, Androscoggin Gleaners, and St. Mary’s Food Pantry -- serving food-insecure families, youth, & adults, in Lewiston’s Tree Streets neighborhood. Activities include coordination of skill-building & educational opportunities; facilitation of research & evaluation strategies; and creation & streamlining of administrative tools & processes. You will have a supportive, flexible, work environment and the opportunity for unique professional development in food justice, public health, & cooperative development.
Convene and coordinate nutrition education & healthy eating activities for children at the Lewiston Farmers’ Market. Facilitate learning and skill building for Community Food Center (CFC) steering committee members. Coordinate meetings. Create and improve administrative processes & tools for the newly formed Lewiston Farmers’ Market Association including policies & procedures; outreach & engagement strategies; information systems. Organize and maintain files for projects including developing a filing system for the CFC. Record, research, evaluate: Carry out evaluation and impact assessment for programs and projects, including; community surveys; listening sessions or focus groups; story collection. Record and collate project and program level data to help assess impact. Support market research on specific equipment and build-out related needs.

Qualifications

Some College

Languages: Portuguese, Somali helpful but not required

Salary

AmeriCorps VISTA Biweekly Stipend, Plus Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend upon completion of service.
