About the organization

The Community Education Coordinator VISTA serves primarily to build and enhance new community health-based education programs in Carson City parks and open spaces placing special emphasis on underserved groups.

The mission of Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is to provide exceptional
parks, open space, and diverse recreational opportunities to enhance the quality of life in Carson City, while preserving our natural resources for future generations.

Duties

Service dates: March 16, 2020 to March 15, 2021
The Community Education Coordinator VISTA will be an essential member of the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space team. In cooperation with our community partners, this person will serve to create new health focused and innovative park-based education programs that improve healthy lives, stewardship, and appreciation of our public lands. This will include developing health-based interpretive programs designed to get more citizens outside where they will benefit from getting healthy in parks and open spaces.

Develop and add health-based community education programming including interpretive health walks, special events, and other activities designed to increase and improve Carson City citizens’ health in parks and open spaces;
Develop and maintain partnerships with organizations and community groups;
Train volunteers to help implement healthy community programming.

Qualifications

Passionate commitment to Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space mission and vision;
Bachelor’s degree in education, science, natural resources, forestry, or a related field;
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
Exceptional writing skills;
Strong communication skills;
Strong organizational skills;
High degree of initiative and spirit of service;
Experience working with community groups;
Preferred: experience teaching in formal or informal settings;
Preferred: reading, writing, and speaking competency in Spanish language.

Salary

$12,490 plus additional benefits
