About the organization
The Alaska Public Defender Agency embraces holistic legal defense for indigent, justice-involved Alaskans. As part of this program we developed our SAME Justice Program (Social services AmeriCorps Members Ensuring Justice). We are recruiting for 13 full time AmeriCorps members to serve in 7 communities across the state, connecting our clients with resources in those communities such as addictions treatment, mental health counseling/support, public benefits, housing, and more. We have two overarching goals: 1) reducing recidivism and 2) reducing incarceration rates and the lengths of custodial sentences. We have found we are often the only voice our clients have in a system so heavily stacked against them.
Complete service needs assessments for referred clients. Connect clients to indicated services to include: addictions treatment, mental health services, public benefits, housing, health insurance, and more. Support clients during their legal case and sometimes beyond. Attend appointments with clients as needed. Facilitate care coordination between community providers. Keep defense attorneys updated on clients' needs, progress, and circumstances. Build community partnerships to benefit our clients. Document client contacts and maintain client information in agency database. Collect service data for the program.
Minimum high school diploma. Some college preferred but not required. Minimum 18 years of age. No past convictions of either misdemeanor or felony crimes. US citizen or permanent resident.
AmeriCorps Living Allowance: $15,100 for an 11-month term
