Our programs include Retirement and Survivors Insurance, Disability Insurance, and SSI benefits. All of our field office positions involve daily public contact, allowing you the opportunity to directly help people gain financial security when they need it most. As a federal agency, we have field office locations throughout the country. However, this posting is only for the South Jordan UT Field Office. The South Jordan office is located in a suburban setting within the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. We serve the southern portion of Salt Lake County, from the Utah County border to just south of Salt Lake City. Our office is a fast paced and team oriented work environment, proudly serving 400-500 people each day.
Claims Specialists provide in-person, telephone, and written assistance to the public on a wide variety of subjects. Claims Specialists conduct interviews to obtain, clarify, and verify information about individuals’ initial and continuing eligibility for all programs. Claims Specialists assist the public by explaining filing options, rights, and responsibilities. Some interviews also involve helping customers overcome communication obstacles. Claims Specialists examine evidence, research policy, utilize multiple computer programs, and analyze eligibility before adjudicating entitlement and determining benefit amounts. Cases are often complex and complicated by frequent changes in policy.
Initial selections are usually made between the GS-5 and GS-9 levels, depending on applicant's qualifications, with opportunity for future promotion to GS 11 level within the position.
For GS-5: Three years of general experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the federal service that demonstrates the ability to 1) analyze problems, identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; 2) plan and organize work; 3) communicate effectively orally and in writing; and 4) use online technology and automation tools. Examples of qualifying experience include analyzing, explaining, applying or interpreting laws, rules, regulation or policies.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION:
Education may be substituted for experience or may be combined with experience and will be made in accordance with the OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions. Selectees who use education to qualify will be asked to provide official transcripts.
