The majority of positions at Social Security involve working directly with the public, and positions are located throughout the country. Our Public Contact Representatives receive extensive training and mentoring in Social Security programs and state laws.

Duties

Claims Specialists speak with beneficiaries about their rights under Social Security laws; gather facts and evidence to establish eligibility for benefits; make critical decisions to determine benefit amounts to individuals; and use state-of-the-art technology to access and update claims information.

SSA is seeking job applicants with exceptional customer service skills for a Claims Specialist (CS) position in Boston, MA. The CS position is an entry level position for SSA’s online claim division. Incumbents are responsible for providing direct service to the public. They conduct interviews and adjudicate customer’s claims for retirement, survivors and disability benefits. Claims Specialists work with beneficiaries to establish eligibility for payment, offer referral services, and identify and investigate potential program abuse. This is a career ladder position with promotion potential to the GS-11 level. Initial selections are normally made at the GS-5 or GS-7 level.

Qualifications

For GS-5, three years of general experience that demonstrates the ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; plan and organize work; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

For GS-7, one year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

$37,647 - $69,016
