The majority of positions at Social Security involve working directly with the public, and positions are located throughout the country. Our Public Contact Representatives receive extensive training and mentoring in Social Security programs and state laws.

Duties

Public Contact Representatives speak with beneficiaries about their rights under Social Security laws; gather facts and evidence to establish eligibility for benefits; make critical decisions to determine benefit amounts to individuals; and use state-of-the-art technology to access and update claims information.

SSA is seeking job applicants with exceptional customer service skills for a Claims Specialist (CS) position in the Glendale, AZ. The CS position is an entry level position for SSA’s field offices. Incumbents are responsible for providing direct service to the public. They conduct interviews and adjudicate customer’s claims for retirement, survivors and disability benefits. Claims Representatives work with beneficiaries to establish continuing eligibility for payment, provide assistance with administrative appeals, authorize payment, offer referral services, and identify and investigate potential program abuse. This is a career ladder position with promotion potential to the GS-11 level. Initial selections are normally made at the GS-5 or GS-7 level.

Qualifications

For GS-5, three years of general experience that demonstrates the ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; plan and organize work; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

For GS-7, one year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Education may be substituted for experience or may be combined with experience and will be made in accordance with the OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions. Selectees who use education to qualify will be asked to provide official transcripts upon selection.

For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor’s degree. One year of study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.

For GS-7: One full year of graduate level education in a related field OR a Bachelor’s Degree with superior academic achievement in a related field.
