Broward College AmeriCorps VISTA Commissions Research Associate
About the organization
Broward College is operationalizing a movement to increase educational access and attainment levels in Broward County. This movement is Broward UP - aimed at targeting the needs of County residents in 6 zip codes, called Broward UP communities. Despite Broward County's booming economy, Broward UP communities have the highest poverty rates and income inequality among all communities in the county. In Broward UP communities, an astonishing 61% of households earn less than the average median income in Broward County, and only 26.9% have a college degree. The goals of Broward UP communities are to: increase college access and attendance; improve degree and certificate attainment; raise social & economic mobility. Broward UP has created 10 Commissions to address identified areas of need.
The mission of Broward UP is to remove barriers to meaningful employment by providing workforce training, education, and support for every County resident to realize their unlimited potential.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop and coordinate professional development opportunities for additional Broward College VISTA members, Commission members and volunteers. The VISTA member will also partner with Broward UP leadership and the Institutional Research Department to create a tracking system to track individual Commission progress and overall impact data for Broward UP. The VISTA member will be responsible for increasing partnerships of municipalities and community agencies to support Broward UP initiatives. In addition, the VISTA member will be responsible for coordinating events to create synergy among Commissions and Broward UP partners.
