About the organization

BikeWalkKC is a regional nonprofit with a mission to redefine our streets as places for people to build a culture of active living. We work to improve walking and biking through education, public policy, advocacy, urban planning, and community building. The VISTA will be working on a project called Complete KC, our vision for a connected network of city streets that provide people with public spaces for recreation, transportation, access to nature, and connections between housing, jobs, and education. The Complete KC network will include a variety of street-level improvements that could include wider sidewalks, street trees, bike paths, green solutions for stormwater, mini parks, and more. The VISTA will be working as a community organizer to build support for this vision, and to communicate how it supports other local priorities related to public health, air quality, access to jobs and education, and quality of life. Their work will include elements of data systems, community partners

Duties

The Community Organizer VISTA will help us grow support for policies and plans that improve Kansas City’s built environment for active living and active transportation - especially with individuals, neighborhood associations, and other community groups in the urban core. The Community Organizer VISTA will primarily work on our Complete KC project, a vision for a network of Complete Streets that connect housing, jobs, schools, and other destinations with walkable, bikeable routes to support Kansas City’s public health, sustainability, equity, safety, and economy. The Community Organizer VISTA will work primarily in neighborhoods in the urban core of Kansas City, MO - including Downtown, Midtown, the East Side, and the Historic Northeast. Additional work may include urban core neighborhoods in Kansas City, KS. Priority will be given to applicants who live in and/or have strong personal ties to one or more of our target neighborhoods listed above.
