The U.S. Department of Education (ED) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is an independent entity responsible for identifying fraud, waste, abuse, and criminal activity involving ED funds, programs, and operations. We conduct independent audits, reviews, and criminal and civil investigations. We recommend actions to address systemic weaknesses, improve ED’s programs and operations and changes needed in Federal laws and regulations.

Duties

This is an entry-level position located in ED-OIG’s Audit Services (AS). No experience is necessary and full training is provided. AS provides a full range of professional audit activities covering all programs and operations of ED. AS works to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in ED programs; detect and deter fraud, waste, or abuse in ED’s activities and operations; and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

You will be part of a team that conducts audits and other reviews of significant ED initiatives and priorities. Responsibilities of this position include:
1. Developing and applying knowledge of ED-OIG policies and procedures and relevant professional standards.
2. Performing routine research and analytical activities.
3. Assisting team members in obtaining testimonial evidence through interviews of officials responsible for activities being audited.
4. Examining records and other information, such as policies and procedures, invoices, contracts, grant agreements, and grant expenditure documentation.
5. Preparing work products, such as results of interviews and documentation review, spreadsheets to summarize data analysis, report segments, charts, exhibits, and summaries, as instructed.

To fulfill these responsibilities, up to 25 percent travel may be required.

Qualifications

1. Education

a. Bachelor's or Master's Degree in a field related to accounting, business, finance, or public administration; or
b. A combination of college education and experience in performance auditing.

2. U.S. Citizenship required.

3. May be required to complete background investigation and drug screening.

4. A one-year probationary period may be required.

Salary

GS-7/9 with promotion potential to GS-13
