About the organization

The Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life, a research unit in the Moody College of Communications at The University of Texas at Austin, is seeking civic enthusiasts to support and strengthen youth programs designed to cultivate informed voters and engaged citizens. Speak Up! Speak Out! engages underserved middle and high school students across Texas who attend targeted Title I schools. By participating in the program, students can become leaders and gain valuable skills in community research and involvement and problem solving. The project-based civic education program engages teachers, mentors, community leaders, and students. Annually, Speak Up! Speak Out! engages over 70 community participants and 1,500 students. To address the lack of civic engagement in low-income and minority communities, along with few existing programs reaching those citizens or students, Speak Up! Speak Out! targets middle and high school students at Title I Texas schools. By participating in this program,


The Civic Outreach Expansion VISTA will build capacity for Speak Up Speak Out by participating in the thoughtful planning and designing of programming partnerships for strategic implementation. Develop systems to collect, maintain, and report member school's progress and involvement and provide teachers access to all curriculum and program support materials. Organize and create a sustainable set of data measurement tools and collection methods. The VISTA member will improve civic education programming event planning and efficiency- specifically Speak Up Speak Out civic fair & professional development and New Politics Forum Leadership Summit, Texas Tribune Festival, & Campaign Bootcamp. Collaborate with outreach team to identify best practices and activities for program implementation and design all program activities. Develop/ update curricula for specific events and use lnDesign and other platforms to create event collateral with standardized branding.
