AmeriCorps VISTA- Transition out of Poverty (TOP) Coordinator
Catholic Charities Charlotte
About the organization
Nationally, it is estimated that 12.7% of residents live below the poverty line and in North Carolina, an estimated 16.4% of residents and 23.5% of children live without adequate means. According to FeedingAmerica.org, significant food insecurity exists across numerous counties comprising our service area: Buncombe, Mecklenburg, Forsyth, Cleveland, Guilford, Watauga, Richmond and Anson. Individuals in our community currently utilize our agency food pantry on a monthly basis and have been for years. Our agency data has identified that many participants have utilized our food pantry multiple times over a two year period. To break this cycle, in May, our agency implemented an enhancement to our existing food pantry called Transition out of Poverty (TOP). This enhancement incorporated case management services to address the issues beyond food that our participants are dealing with on a daily basis.
The VISTA will assist with implementation and coordination of the TOP program. The member will be responsible for recruiting, on-boarding, training, and managing volunteers for the program. Managing volunteers includes facilitating meetings, scheduling, communicating with and training volunteers. The member will expand on the resource guide as they build relationships with organizations in the community. The VISTA will create partnerships with grocery stores that the agency is able to purchase or receive donated food from. The VISTA will coordinate food drives with schools, parishes and businesses and be the main contact for all food donations. The VISTA will analyze the impact of services through looking at data provided through the Self Sufficiency Matrix (SSM) tool that each participant will complete. The SSM will be used as a measurement tool for the purposes of determining change over time. This tool looks specifically at housing, education, food, healthcare and income.
