About the organization

Serve as a VISTA Member with MENTOR Virginia (MVA)! MVA is a Richmond-based, statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports mentoring programs around Virginia with a focus on the expansion of research-based, high-quality mentoring in Virginia. Our vision is that every child who needs a mentor has a mentor. VISTA Members will help further our mission is to provide training and technical assistance to mentors and mentoring programs and increase the quality and quantity of mentoring for Virginia's youth. As a MVA VISTA member, you will join our team of full-time VISTA Members serving throughout Virginia. MVA works with VISTA Members directly throughout their year of service by assisting with VISTA Member screening and placement at host organizations, and providing training and ongoing support. Our VISTA Members serve with partner organizations to support each organization's internal capacity.


During your year of service, you will be supporting the development of mentoring program at The Up Center in Norfolk, VA.

Build a more equitable community through mentoring. The Up Center’s mission is to change the trajectories of children and families from crisis to wholeness. The Up Center provides more than 20 critical support services for children and families in our community, including mental health counseling, parenting education and support, youth mentoring, foster care and adoption, housing and financial counseling, and services for people with disabilities. .The AmeriCorps VISTA Member will work closely with the staff of the Up Center in order to create recruiting, training, and sustainability measures. The AmeriCorps VISTA Member will research and coordinate recruitment events. Create and implement evaluative practices to track recruitment and volunteer retention in order to help with program sustainability. Research and implement a volunteer data management system. Research and assist in the coordination of fundraising events and preparation of grants.
