AmeriCorps VISTA-Assistant Program Coordinator YMP
Catholic Charities Chicago
About the organization
Catholic Charities’ Lake County Youth Mentorship Program pairs youth ages 9-12 from Waukegan, Illinois with well-trained volunteer mentors, who can serve as positive role models, introduce youth to new experiences, and provide social-emotional support. Catholic Charities works closely with local elementary and middle school staff to identify youth who are at greater risk of engaging in risky behavior or academic failure. Youth participants work 1:1 with their mentor to set goals, process difficult emotions, improve communication skills, develop new hobbies and interests, and improve self-confidence. Volunteer mentors must be at least 21 years old and willing to meet with their mentee for a few hours each week for at least 1 year. Mentors, mentees and their families receive coaching and support from our staff throughout their time in the program to ensure that matches last at least 12 months.
VISTA will primarily focus on volunteer recruitment, training, and event planning. VISTA will work closely with program staff to create a formal recruitment plan that includes developing new outreach materials, planning social media campaigns, and developing relationships with community stakeholders (schools, churches, libraries, park districts) who can refer volunteers to the program. VISTA will co-facilitate new mentor trainings, and develop continuing education programs for current mentors on topics like building resilience, measuring impact, and active listening. VISTA plans quarterly Open Houses designed to attract new volunteers, and special events like campfires, fishing expeditions, and theater events for current participants. VISTA will help us launch our Mentoring Rewards Program, an effort to help relieve some of the financial burden on mentors by engaging local organizations and businesses to offer discounts to active volunteers.
