Catherine McAuley Center
About the organization
The Catherine McAuley Center offers hope and opportunity through educational and supportive services that promote stability, skill-building, and connection. The Educational Services program helps over 450 students every year learn English, math, computer, conversation skills, and study for the citizenship exam.
This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships by placing full-time capacity building support in nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. There are three focus areas, this project being in the Education Corps, which supports sites in long-term approaches to issues related to K-12 educational success and college access including literacy programs.
Member Duties: The goal of this project is to equip low-income, immigrants, and refugees with limited English proficiency, to educational opportunities that will contribute to their long-term financial stability. The VISTA will continue the work of our previous member, teaching classes, refining the existing curriculum, and training volunteers to continue the work after their service term. They will help recruit students, conduct testing, and collaborate with the Employment Services Coordinator to support participants’ employment goals. They will also help to identify opportunities and assist with developing ESL programming at local companies employing English language learners. Additionally, this member will provide support in streamlining and increasing efficiency/effectiveness of Education program data-management systems. As a result of the VISTA project, CMC will be better able to support immigrants and refugees with increased language ability and employment opportunities.
Project goals: 1) Member will implement and teach 2 concurrent classes of Workplace English weekly. They will assess and refine the curriculum in real time, enabling staff and volunteers to effectively teach the classes in the future. 2) Member will help staff the Language Lab/ computer skills learning lab and facilitate the training of volunteers to continue that role.
