Macalester College

About the organization

Macalester College is a residential liberal arts college in St. Paul, MN. The college mission of service to society and supporting diversity fuels the well-established Civic Engagement Center. Urban Roots is a longtime community partner with Macalester through their work on food-related youth programming in a low-income community. This initiative will connect the dots between environmental justice, poverty reduction, and public health.

Member Duties: The VISTA will assess the current campus food shelf and food recovery program on campus and make changes to maximize equity and access for low-income students. This could include getting feedback from users and exploring programs at other schools. Writing up an operations manual, promoting the programs to students, and developing a proposal for stable funding are all possible duties. The VISTA will also nurture relationships with Macalester’s food justice community partners such as Urban Roots and food shelves. Recruitment and training of a diverse pool of student volunteers will be a key part of each project.

Our VISTA’s work will address the issues of hunger and engage a college students to become empowered to work on equitable food access. The VISTA will be part of our larger Civic Engagement Center team and thus learn about civic engagement in higher education and community-based work at nonprofits. The VISTA will have responsibility for the recruitment of culturally diverse student volunteers and creating an infrastructure for a dynamic food justice program.
