Community Action Center of Northfield

About the organization

For over 50 years, Community Action Center of Northfield (CAC) has provided basic needs support for families throughout the Northfield, MN area. Specifically, in 2019 CAC is focusing on food systems and our role in developing deeper and more integrated community impact around food access for families. Northfield’s community of organic farms, CSA’s, and Cooperatives are interested in potential collaborative partnerships, but CAC has lacked the capacity to explore these new systems and partnerships. 90% of our clients report that they would like healthier fruit and vegetable options. This information is stretching the capacity of the organization to innovatively invest in new and collaborative approaches to addressing the needs of our clients.

This project is part of the Community Corps VISTA Program, operated by Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact. The program strives to eliminate poverty through campus-community partnerships.

Member Duties: The VISTA will focus on three primary objectives: 1. Increasing low-income families’ access to CAC’s food support systems. This includes engaging families throughout the community in championing their own access to healthy foods. The VISTA will focus on community organizing as a way to give power and voice to those experiencing food insecurity. 2. Increasing quantity of locally grown produce available at CAC’s food shelf. This includes working closely with local Community Supported Agriculture farms to provide fresh and local produce to the CAC food shelf. Explore pilot programs such as farm gleaning or other food recovery programs. 3. Increasing CAC’s volunteer recruitment, retention, support, and training in collaboration with Carleton College. This includes working creatively to empower and engage the local community to get involved and champion more equitable and just food access for all.
