About the organization

Hands On Atlanta tackles Greater Atlanta's most pressing needs by igniting a passion for service and creating lifelong community volunteers.

Duties

• Tutor small groups of students at an elementary or middle school with the goal of growing students’ proficiency in ELA and/or math. Note, some Part-Time tutors may serve at an afterschool program at a City of Atlanta Center of Hope.
• Track student progress through maintaining detailed and accurate records of tutoring sessions. Submit timely progress reports of student data using Hands On Atlanta’s internal software and assist collecting broader student data sets as needed.
• Support teachers and school administrators by providing assistance to students, co-planning lessons, leading learning activities, and participating in school events.
• Foster meaningful and productive relationships with students, teachers, school officials, and parents.
• Promote and conduct outreach for Discovery, our Saturday enrichment program, to increase student participation and assist in curriculum development.
• Attend Discovery and engage with community volunteers up to 10 Saturdays over the school year. This includes helping with volunteer recruitment and recognition, sign-in, lesson facilitation, and student support.
• Coordinate and support volunteers during national and local days of service, including MLK Day and Hands On Atlanta Day.
• Create and maintain a “service journal” to capture reflections and stories of impact.
• Participate in AmeriCorps trainings and development days and complete a Leadership/Legacy project at the end of your service term.

Qualifications

• Able to commit to completing 900 hours of full-time service over 10 months
• Have a bachelor’s degree or are currently pursuing your bachelor’s
• Able to clear state and federal background checks
•Able to clear a NSOPW check
•Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Nationals or Lawful Permanent Residents of the U.S.
•Valid driver’s license, car, and ability to navigate in and around greater Atlanta
• Volunteer/community service experience in schools and/or nonprofits, and with children
• Demonstrated leadership ability
• Adaptability and perseverance in the face of obstacles
• Ability to maintain positive and respectful rapport with students, parents, and community members
• Able to seek out and work effectively with others who have diverse perspectives, talents, and backgrounds; contribute to a team climate in which differences are valued and supported
• Effective communication skills, including comfort with public speaking
• Highly organized; ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and achieve goals in a face-paced environment
• Ability to create thoughtful and thorough documentation of interactions with children, parents, and volunteers
