About the organization

Hands On Atlanta tackles Greater Atlanta's most pressing needs by igniting a passion for service and creating lifelong community volunteers.


• Coach and mentor a caseload of 20-30 elementary or middle school students and facilitate activities centered around social emotional learning, community engagement, and academic growth.
• Conduct checks with caseload students to provide guidance in their development of SEL competencies, including self-awareness, conflict resolution, communication, and resource utilization.
• Provide behavioral interventions and support to students in order to decrease behavioral incidents and office referrals
• Create and lead weekly group sessions to help students develop SEL competencies, focusing on self-awareness, peer group selection, conflict avoidance, academic confidence, etc.
• Debrief SEL caseload student needs with school staff and SEL team at least once a week; collect teacher observations, discuss behavior management strategies, etc.
• Track student progress through maintaining detailed and accurate records of student meetings, interventions, and group sessions and teacher/staff observations. Submit timely progress reports of student data using Hands On Atlanta’s internal software and assist collecting broader student data sets as needed.
• Support teachers and school administrators by assisting students, co-planning lessons, leading learning activities, and participating in school events.
• Foster meaningful and productive relationships with students, teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, school officials, and parents.


• Able to commit to completing 1,700 hours of full-time service over 10 months
• Car to navigate in and around the Atlanta area
• Have a bachelor’s degree or are currently pursuing your bachelor’s
• Able to clear state and federal background checks
•Able to clear a NSOPW check
•Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Nationals or Lawful Permanent Residents of the U.S.
• Professional and/or community service experience in schools and nonprofits, and with children
• Understanding of social and emotional learning competencies and coaching strategies
• Adaptability and perseverance in the face of obstacles
• Ability to maintain positive and respectful rapport with students, guidance counselors/social workers, parents, and community members
• Able to seek out and work effectively with others who have diverse perspectives, talents, and backgrounds; contribute to a team climate in which differences are valued and supported

Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a phone screen and a subset of candidates screened over the phone will be invited for a group interview. Special accommodations will be made for out of state candidates. The Corporation for National and Community Service requires a separate online application. A select group of final candidates, who have participated in a networking/group interview, will be invited to complete the CNCS application. After completion of this application Finalists will be invited for a final interview with leaders of the Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps team and asked to submit references.
