Literacy First

About the organization

Literacy First is an AmeriCorps tutoring program based in Austin, TX that focuses on early literacy. Literacy First tutors provide one-to-one tutoring to struggling readers in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. We use explicit, research-based curriculum to address critical reading skills. All training and mentorship is provided by our supervisors and staff, who are literacy experts.

Primary Functions

- Conduct 30-minute tutoring sessions with K-2nd grade students using Literacy First curriculum
Serve 45 hours each week, Monday – Friday from 7:30am-3:30pm tutoring and 5 hours with a community partnership

- Listen to and document student vocalizations in a noisy environment

- Communicate effectively with Literacy First staff, school staff, and teammates

- Maintain organized and proper documentation of all lesson plans and student data

- Attend pre-service training and ongoing literacy trainings throughout the year

- Administer assessments to identify students that qualify for Literacy First tutoring

- Assess and record students’ progress using weekly progress monitoring probes

- Attend data meetings with campus staff to communicate student progress

Secondary Functions: Community Service

- Participate in a weekly community partnership with nonprofits and/or after-school programs

- Attend occasional weekend service projects

- Engage in professional development activities


Desired Qualifications

- Interest in literacy, education, community service, educational equity, or non-profit work

- Desire to work with young children ages 5-8

- Responsible, professional, motivated

- Thrives in a structured environment

- Ability to work cohesively on a team

- Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence

AmeriCorps Requirements

- U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien

- Commitment to serve 10 months, September 1, 2020 through June 25, 2021

- Complete 1700 hours of service by June 25, 2021

- Serve 45 hours per week

- High school diploma or equivalent required
