About the organization

The Texas Family Literacy Initiative is a part of the AmeriCorps network of state and national service programs that engages 80,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in communities throughout the nation.

This program provides literacy services to adults, in Houston, Literacy Services include:

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation

Workplace Literacy/Workforce Infusion

Computer Literacy


Qualified applicants will serve as full time volunteer instructors with adult education organizations throughout Houston. This is an 11-month temporary position in which they complete 1700 hours of service from August 2019-July 2020. In exchange for their service, members receive the following benefits:

$13,732 annual stipend (distributed on a bi-weekly basis)

Student Loan Forbearance

$6095 education award issued after completion of service

Health Insurance

Valuable experience and over 100 hours of professional development

Joining a national network of over 80,000 federally recognized service members


We are looking for candidates with

A Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Extensive work experience may be supplemented for education.

Experience or interest in education

Experience or interest in working with diverse populations

A service oriented mindset

A desire to for professional development and networking opportunities
