About the organization
The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) was founded in 2007 for the public benefit of all Iraq, and is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational, English-speaking liberal arts university. In 2011, AUIS moved to its new 400-acre marble-and-glass campus overlooking historic Sulaimani, a thriving economic center of more than a million residents.
The campus has 50 classrooms, high-tech computer labs, an expansive library, auditoriums, dining facilities, and sports facilities. Our 1,300 students are taught in English by faculty members from approximately 20 different countries. AUIS, with support from the European Union and Expertise France (EF), will create Iraq’s first accelerator program for enterprises throughout the country to more effectively and rapidly grow their businesses. The Accelerator will offer the complete spectrum of support for entrepreneurial development.
AUIS is looking for an experienced Accelerator Director to create and implement the overall strategy and curriculum, cultivate an investor and mentor network, and manage all accelerator staff for the new AEI Accelerator. The Accelerator Director will lead the effort to build up AUIS’s new accelerator program, including managing the office and team, helping to design the program and curriculum, and ensuring the program hits the strategic objectives of AUIS and the donor organizations.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Manage the creation of the new Accelerator, including the training and development of staff, supporting the programming elements, and equipping the accelerator space, among other responsibilities;
Manage the day-to-day operations of Accelerator program and staff;
Ensure that all Accelerator programming (training, mentorship, investment) is implemented at the highest quality;
Support in development of the curriculum and program design for the Accelerator;
Manage the relationship with program donors and partners;
Collect, analyze and share M&E from programs and participants;
Lead the development of mentorship and investment networks across Iraq and the Middle East;
Supervise budgets of operational and programmatic costs, in partnership with the grant manager;
Coordinate with other parts of the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani to create successful procedures for the management of the Accelerator;
Other tasks as required.
Education and Experience:
Graduate degree in business or related field preferred; bachelor’s degree plus previous experience in entrepreneurship may substitute;
7+ years professional experience in startups, business, or technology;
Extensive experience in managing multicultural teams and programs;
Experience in supporting, training or mentoring early and growth stage startups in different industries;
Knowledge of donor-funded projects a plus;
Domain expertise or training experience in marketing, financial management, leadership or investment a plus;
An understanding of the business and entrepreneurial ecosystem in Iraq or the Middle East preferred;
Fluent in English; knowledge of Arabic or Kurdish a plus
Able to create and lead new initiatives;
Self starter personality; ability to build teams and programs with minimal supervision;
Strong problem solver and decision-maker;
Excellent communicator, both orally and written, with a variety of stakeholders;
Team-oriented and willing to support colleagues and direct reports;
Ability to train and mentor entrepreneurs;
Process-oriented with good attention to detail;
Enthusiastic, results-oriented and possessing a growth-mindset;
Experience working in multicultural teams.
