Tropical Storm Threatens Yucatan; Volunteers Consolidated
The season’s first hurricane, which is currently still tropical storm Chantal, is approaching the Yucatan peninsula. After soaking islands in the Caribbean, Chantal is predicted to make landfall somewhere along the 200 mile stretch of coastline between Cancun, Mexico, the southern portion of the Bay of Campeche and Belize sometime late Monday, August 20th or into morning Tuesday, August 21st.
A tropical storm warning is currently in effect for the Cayman Islands, coastal Belize and the east coast of the Yucatan peninsula northward to Cancun.
In Belize, all Peace Corps Volunteers located in threatened areas have been consolidated and are in reinforced buildings in the interior city of Belmopan where they will remain with staff until the storm passes.
