Status of Peace Corps Volunteers in Belize
Washington, D.C., October 5, 2000 - In the aftermath of Hurricane Keith, most Peace Corps Volunteers in Belize have returned to their sites. Volunteers in Belize City returned yesterday, and volunteers in the capital, Belmopan, and San Ignacio will return later today. Volunteers in the southern areas of Dangriga, Placencia, Independence and Punta Gorda are expected to return tomorrow.
Peace Corps staff will assess the sites in the northern areas of the country and Ambergris Caye, including Orange Walk, Corozal, and San Pedro. Volunteers serving in these sites are currently staying in Belize City. When the assessment is completed, Volunteers will return to their assignments.
Peace Corps Volunteers are assisting in relief efforts, such as packaging relief supplies for shipment to other areas of the country.
