Peace Corps Partners with The National Human Services Assembly

WASHINGTON D.C., Jan. 11, 2011 The Peace Corps and The National Human Services Assembly (The Assembly) are proud to announce a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to exchange information, promote volunteering in the United States and abroad, and provide career and volunteer opportunities for returned Peace Corps volunteers.

We are proud to announce an MOU with The Assembly, which includes many of the leading nonprofit organizations in the United States and abroad, said Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams. This partnership will help us recruit the next generation of Peace Corps volunteers, and provide returned Peace Corps volunteers with career and volunteer opportunities upon their return to the United States.

President and CEO of The Assembly, Irv Katz, said: We are delighted to be joining with the Peace Corps to help recruit the next generation of Peace Corps Volunteers who, when they return home, will be well positioned to pursue careers with our vast network of health and human service organizations here in the United States. The Peace Corps and the National Assembly share the goals of world-wide human and community development and nurturing talent among diverse populations. This is a natural alliance and we look forward to a very productive working relationship.

The Assembly is an association of 79 of the nations leading national nonprofits in the fields of health, human and community development, and human services. Such organizations and their constituent services networks comprise a $32 billion sector that employs over 800,000 workers, operating from over 150,000 locations. Many of the member organizations are national offices of large networks of local health and human service organizations. Others are national research or resource organizations or national programs. Among of the nonprofits in The Assembly are AARP, Feeding America, Girl Scouts of America, the National Urban League, Volunteers of America. About the Peace Corps: President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961, by executive order. Peace Corps will commemorate 50 years of promoting peace and friendship around the world throughout 2011. Historically, more than 200,000 Americans have served with the Peace Corps to promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of 139 host countries. Today, 8,655 volunteers are working with local communities in 77 host countries. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment.
