In August 2018, Peace Corps was invited to establish a program in Montenegro.

At the invitation of governments around the world, Peace Corps Volunteers work alongside community members on locally prioritized projects that build relationships, promote knowledge exchange, and make a lasting and measurable impact. After a formal intergovernmental agreement was signed in 2019, Peace Corps Volunteers started working with communities and schools in Montenegro in 2022 to help meet the diverse needs of their communities and to strengthen the peace and friendship between the United States and Montenegro. To this day, the three original goals of Peace Corps remain the same:

  • To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women;
  • To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served;
  • To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

At the request of the Government of Montenegro, the program focuses on English Education and Youth Engagement. Peace Corps operates in Montenegro since 2019. This program is managed and supported by the Peace Corps staff in Podgorica, Montenegro and in Tirana, Albania. Peace Corps Albania and Montenegro is one of the first two-country posts among Peace Corps countries.

Following an intensive 11-week training, Peace Corps Volunteers in Montenegro serve for two years in one community in the following program based in primary and secondary schools:

English Education

When Volunteers are supporting English Education in their host school and community, they collaborate with the English language teachers and conduct the following activities:

  • Use of co-teaching approaches for planning and presenting English language lessons, as well as promoting gender equity.
  • Creating opportunities for practicing and improving English language skills.
  • Supporting extracurricular activities for English, Youth, and leadership skills development.
  • Implementing school facilities improvement projects.
  • Providing non-formal English education to community members.

Peace Corps Albania and Montenegro will support a new group of American Volunteers ready to offer skills and talents and collaborate with schools throughout Montenegro each year. We invite all those who are interested to apply for a U.S. Volunteer.
