The Country Director of Lesotho
Randa Wilkinson , Country Director for Peace Corps Lesotho

Khotsong! Peace!

What motivates you to join the Peace Corps? And what is special about Peace Corps Lesotho?

Also known as The Kingdom in the Sky, the Kingdom of Lesotho is a stunningly beautiful country of mountains, waterfalls and vast vistas of field and plains, with a rich culture, proud history, and welcoming, friendly people.

Established in 1967, Peace Corps Lesotho is proud of being one of the longest running programs on the African continent with a legacy of more than 2,700 Americans who have had the privilege of living and serving the people of the Mountain Kingdom. Close collaboration between the Government of Lesotho and the Peace Corps informs the work that Peace Corps Volunteers and their community members focus on; locally prioritized projects that build relationships, promote knowledge exchange, and make a lasting and measurable impact.

Current Volunteers work either in health or education projects. Education Volunteers co-teach literacy, numeracy, and basic life skills in primary schools. Health Volunteers work with their counterparts in rural health clinics supporting supply chain management and HIV prevention activities for vulnerable populations. In addition, Volunteers support activities for adolescents, out of school youth, and other groups. Volunteers’ daily presence in their communities, their ability to converse in Sesotho or SiPhuthi or isiXhosa, their curiosity and openness to the customs and the cultures of Lesotho change their own approach to life.

As they befriend children and elders, read under a tree, try new foods, help their host families work in the fields, join in with community improvement projects, their connections with community members are transformational.

If you are looking for the opportunity to serve with curiosity, humility and kindness, to work side by side with your counterpart, neighbor, host mother on a community identified project, to suspend judgement and advice, to be open to a new way of doing things, to discover dimensions in your own being which might never have emerged in the context of familiar and comfortable surroundings, then Peace Corps Lesotho welcomes you!

Khotso, Pula, Nala!

Peace, Rain, Prosperity!
