One with the Other

Peace Corps service changes the Volunteer.

By Darrel Young - Peace Corps Volunteer, Colombia (1961 - 1963)

Peace Corps calls us beyond ourselves.

We give ourselves over to strange people

In strange lands, feeling strangely at home,

Discovering parts of ourselves we never knew existed.

Seeing life through eyes of the Other,

We see more, feel more, understand more.

We are more, in all things, ever after.

This poem was entered in the returned Volunteer category for the 2015 Peace Corps Poetry Contest. The contest received more than 1,000 submissions, representing over 50 years of Peace Corps service in more than 100 countries.
