Impressions from a Bus Ride

Sensory imagery of beautiful Samoa.

By Paula Rossell - Peace Corps Volunteer, Western Samoa (1993 - 1995)

Ukulele tune

A mat woven fine

Cooked pig in green basket

Sunday feast so sublime

Layers of persons

Stacked two at a time

A flourish of colors

There’s no reason or rhyme

The smell of saltwater

Of fish on the line

Heady scent of gardenia

The pleasure is mine

Bus sputters and chokes

Up steep mountain incline

Passengers hold their breath

For the arduous climb

A song is begun

Everyone feeling fine

Hymns float to the tree-tops

Melody for all time
