About this program

The Master of Arts program in Media Studies offers an interdisciplinary curriculum in media theory, design, and practice with an emphasis on the production of video, audio, and Web-based media. Students gain experience in creative media making, critical analysis and reflection, and entrepreneurialism and management - guided by a faculty that includes noted filmmakers, researchers, designers, and scholars. Designed to accommodate working students, this flexible program enables you to study full-time or part-time, onsite in New York, or online from anywhere. Part of the School of Media Studies (SMS) at The New School, the graduate program in Media Studies reflects the university's historical commitment to progressive education, an activist orientation, and the advancement of global perspectives.

The New School's Master of Science program in Media Management offers students the tools, professional network, and practical experience they need to succeed in today's media industries. Our MS in Media Management degree gives students a solid foundation in the latest concepts and practices for managing traditional and emergent media platforms, including: television, movies, music, advertising, games, social media, and transmedia storytelling. Graduates pursue their passions in many areas, including production, marketing, and business management for TV, film, radio, and Internet-based media; branding, advertising, and social media marketing; and media administration for commercial and nonprofit organizations.

Application requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor degree (Or a US equivalent) from an accredited institution.

Admissions process

Applications consist of transcripts from previous graduate and/or undergraduate study, 2 letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose and a description of service. Applications are evaluated based on stated career goals, moral commitment, community involvement, and academic achievement. A decision to admit is based on the committee's belief in your potential to successfully complete an advanced degree. As part of the admission process, your statement of purpose and letters of recommendation are carefully reviewed for evidence of interpersonal skills, maturity, and leadership potential, among other qualities.

Internship

Internship opportunities for full time students are approximately 400 hours over the course of the degree. Our career services staff is on hand to assist students in finding an internship placement or students can select a site themselves. Examples of previous internship sites include the following: Human Rights Watch, TIDAL, BET (Viacom), Tiffany and Company, SheKnows Media, and The New York Times.

Other opportunities

Fellows can take classes across the university from programs outside their course of study, opening up opportunities in other disciplines, such as design. Fellows receive individualized career advising from staff familiar with the Peace Corps and its mission and values. Fellows from all programs can participate in our annual International Field Program or United Nations Summer Study.

Both degrees can be completed entirely online. In addition, our onsite courses are primarily held once a week in the evenings to cater to working adults
