St. Catherine University - Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (MAOL)

About this program

The St. Catherine University MAOL Coverdell Fellows program provides rigorous academic training and professional field experiences to prepare effective, ethical and enduring leaders for an array of professional work in for-profits, non-profits and the public sector. MAOL graduates direct organizations from homeless shelters to community clinics to museums, address disparities in healthcare access, shape corporate responsibility in global companies, pursue entrepreneurial opportunities, tackle public policy and address the challenges facing Minnesota’s underserved communities. The MAOL degree provides an interdisciplinary professional education through the lenses of ethics, leadership and a global perspective. Areas of concentration include: strategic management, ethics and leadership, dispute resolution, healthcare leadership, and information services and technology.

Application requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements for admission: a completed bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4 point scale, minimum of two years of professional work experience and demonstrated leadership in the private or public sector (Peace Corps service applicable). A completed application includes the application form, a personal statement, current resume, two recommendations from professional or academic references (no personal references) and official transcripts for each post-secondary institution attended. No test scores (GRE or GMAT) are required. Visit for detailed instructions and application materials. The application fee is waived for Coverdell Fellows program applicants.

Admissions process

Check the Coverdell Fellows box on the application for admission fee waiver.  When informed whether or not you are accepted into the MAOL program, you will be informed of your Coverdell status.   An appointment letter will be sent for the Coverdell Fellows program.

Cost savings details

St. Catherine University provides each Fellow accepted into the MAOL program with an award equivalent to approximately $12,000 (approximately 30% of the total MAOL degree cost).  Financial support per Fellow consists of tuition waivers for nine graduate credits, a graduate research assistantship with a $2000 stipend and a St. Catherine University Fellow tuition grant worth $2000.


Fellows engage in a Leadership Action Research Project, either a research-based project focused on an underserved target community or an action-based internship option offering hands-on professional experience within a community organization.

Jobs for alumni

Most MAOL Coverdell Fellows are full-time working professionals pursuing their graduate degree part-time. Their MAOL degree assists graduates in moving into formal leadership roles within their current organizations or making a career transition into a new organization or a new sector.

Nontraditional options

Option to pursue degree part time while receiving the Coverdell Fellowship

Most MAOL courses meet every-other week on weeknights from 6-9 pm or on Saturdays to accommodate working professionals; some courses are offered during J-term and/or on specialized schedule.
