Girls and Guys Leading Our World (GGLOW) Camp seeks to foster self-resilience, self-expression, self-esteem and leadership skills among school-aged children across Gau Island. The 5-day overnight camp involves young adolescents in a range of activities designed to build their confidence, encourage collaboration through exchanges of ideas and teach healthy lifestyles. The activities range from creation of a school mural to seminar style lessons on topics such as stress management and SMART goal setting and include an emphasis on discussions around promoting gender equality. Students are given the opportunity to make friends, meet role models, explore their identities, and consider their goals for a future in a safe environment.
HCNs (Host Country Nationals) are essential to this process not only as role models for the kids, but as working partners in planning and management of the camp. At camp, students and adults will simultaneously acquire new skills, activities and inspiration to bring back to their local communities. Students will be given the chance to put into practice the leadership skills and ideas they acquire during weekly activities within the school. GGLOW camp intends to further train already motivated educators and students and therefore, the prospective attendees are the driving force behind this initiative. They are active participants in school and have earned their place at the camp through demonstrating their commitment to learning and educating others.
After learning about the camp, interested teachers have taken the initiative to bring forth ideas for camp curriculum, highlighting the needs they identify as a main priority. This reciprocal relationship will build capacity at every level between students, teachers, HCNs and PCVs; it will fundamentally reinforce the effectiveness of GGLOW Camps around Gau Island.
