Soon-to-Be 7th Graders Get JumpStart on English
JumpStart, a Peace Corps Costa Rica and CRUSA program, invites soon-to-be 7th graders to a month-long English camp during their January vacation. Jeremy, a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Volunteer in his last year of service, and Kenny, a Youth Development Volunteer who lives nearby, compiled a video to capture the four weeks of learning.
In 2017, Peace Corps Costa Rica completed 14 JumpStart camps around the country.
-239 Costa Rican students participated - an average of 17 per camp.
-226 Costa Rican students successfully graduated from JumpStart camps, or around 95% of participants.
-56% of student graduates improved by 2 or more levels on their post-camp oral exams compared to their starting scores.
-100% of PCVs and co-teachers reported being "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their JumpStart experience.
So see what a JumpStart camp looks like, check out the video below.
JumpStart 2017 took students through English lessons related to food, greetings, birthdays, family members, restaurants, and body parts. Success came not only in English learned but confidence built via high school readiness classes.
