JumpStart is an intensive four-week long English Camp designed to empower students with the knowledge, academic skills and confidence to make a successful transition to high school. In 2020, Peace Corps Volunteers hosted 20 camps throughout Costa Rica. Let's hear from Sam.
JumpStart is an amazing opportunity for the students who get to fine-tune their English skills while building confidence. However, it is also a special opportunity for the Costa Rican co-teachers who help make the camps possible. At PCV Sam’s JumpStart Camp, the two English education students made a lasting impact on the students while also experiencing personal growth. One co-teacher said, “The camp helped me to improve my English and also to realize that teaching is what I want to do with the rest of my life.”

“He accidentally started speaking to the waiter in English at the restaurant” a mother told me of her son. JumpStart is an intensive English program for students entering into 7th grade; it offers participants an opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the language. This particular student had been speaking so much English that day that his mind was still in English mode even after the school day ended. By the end of the camp, the same mother told me that he was excited to start the school year after having had this experience. This is a student who struggled to participate at the beginning of camp, but later excelled and would always volunteer to answer every question.
