Albania

In Albania, nearly 20% of female students drop out before reaching secondary school, compounding female unemployment. There are 92 Volunteers in Albania working with their communities on projects in community economic development, English education, and health.



Armenia Country Map

Armenia

Nearly 60% of Armenian women experience domestic violence at some point in their lives. With greater gender training and equality, Armenian communities will have the resources and support to improve this issue. There are 78 Volunteers in Armenia working with their communities on projects in education and youth development.

Benin

Only 33.5% of adolescent girls in Benin complete lower secondary school, limiting their economic viability. There are 93 Volunteers in Benin working with their communities on projects in agriculture, community economic development, education, and health.




Botswana

Botswana

While 97% of females in Botswana go on to secondary school, more than 22% of women in Botswana are unemployed. Greater leadership and skills development will help to engage women in the formal economy. There are 175 Volunteers in Botswana working with their communities on projects in community economic development, health, and youth development.

In Burkina Faso, 32% of adolescent females enter early marriages and 28% of females give birth before the age of 18, increasing their risk of reproductive health issues. There are 105 Volunteers in Burkina Faso working with their communities on projects in community economic development, education, and health.

In Cambodia, only 54% of female adolescents complete their last year of primary school, prohibiting entrance to secondary school. There are 107 Volunteers in Cambodia working with their communities on projects in education and health.



Cameroon

Cameroon

Cameroon has the third highest rate of adolescent childbearing in Sub-Saharan Africa. With improved access to education and employment opportunities, girls will be better able to delay early childbirth.  There are 168 Volunteers in Cameroon working with their communities on projects in agriculture, education, health, and youth development.



Comoros

Comoros

In Comoros, nearly 40% of women believe that domestic violence can be justified. Greater gender equality and awareness can help communities to deal with this pressing issue. There are 27 Volunteers in Comoros working with their communities on projects in education. 



Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Costa Rican children face a higher than average risk of sexual abuse, especially young girls. Girls’ education and empowerment projects aim to reduce systemic sexism and violence. There are 140 Volunteers in Costa Rica working with their communities on projects in community and youth development and English education.

41% of young women in the Dominican Republic are married by age 18. Early marriage prevents many adolescent girls from completing their education. Ecuador has the highest rate of adolescent pregnancy in South America, with 21% of girls giving birth before the age of 18. Early childbearing prevents girls from finishing their education and limits their career opportunities. There are 119 Volunteers in Ecuador working with their communities on projects in education, health, and youth development.

Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, 19% of adolescent girls are married and 22% give birth to their first baby before age 18. Early marriage and motherhood prevents girls from staying in school. There are 235 Volunteers in Ethiopia working with their communities on projects in education, the environment, and health.



Fiji

Fiji

72% of Fijian married women experienced physical, sexual or emotional violence from their husband/partner in their lifetime. There is evidence that domestic violence is linked to pervasive gender stereotypes and norms of male dominance in Fiji. There are 77 Volunteers in Fiji working with their communities on projects in health and youth development.

In Georgia, only 15.8% of high-level governing positions are occupied by women. Empowerment and encouragement of female voices will lead to greater emphasis on women's issues. There are 111 Volunteers in Georgia working with their communities on projects in community economic development and English education.



The Gambia

The Gambia

Almost 47% of girls in The Gambia marry before age 18. Early marriage, especially to older partners, places girls at greater risk of disease and reproductive health issues. There are 82 Volunteers in The Gambia working with their communities on projects in education, the environment, and health.

In Ghana, only 11.4% of women have stable, wage/salaried employment. Greater gender equality will help to decrease the disparity between men and women in employability. There are 133 Volunteers in Ghana working with their communities on projects in agriculture, education, and health.



Guinea

The literacy rate for adolescent girls in Guinea is only 21.8%. When girls don’t have access to a quality education, it limits their career and personal opportunities. There are currently 87 Volunteers in Guinea working in the areas of education, agriculture and health. 



Guyana

Guyana

Guyana has the second highest rate of teenage pregnancy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Early pregnancy takes girls out of school and can increase the risk of reproductive health issues. There are 77 Volunteers in Guyana working with their communities on projects in education and health.

Jamaica has particularly high rates of domestic violence. Greater gender equality and awareness can help communities to deal with this pressing issue. There are 57 Volunteers in Jamaica working with their communities on projects in education and the environment.

Approximately 1 in 5 girls in Lesotho are married before their 18th birthday. Early and/or forced marriage is a major factor impacting secondary school retention of adolescent girls. There are 83 Volunteers in Lesotho working with their communities on projects in education and health.

Liberia

Education in Liberia has been devastated by over a decade of civil war and the recent Ebola epidemic. Only 13% of Liberia’s school age population has access to adequate school facilities. There are currently 77 Volunteers in Liberia working in education.

41% of girls in Madagascar are married before their 18th birthday, and 1 in 10 Malagasy girls marry before 15. Early and/or forced marriage is a major factor impacting secondary school retention of adolescent girls. Malawi has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world, with approximately 1 in 2 girls married by the age of 18. Early and/or forced marriage is a major factor impacting secondary school retention of adolescent girls. There are 122 Volunteers in Malawi working with their communities on projects in education, the environment, and health, including Volunteers in the Global Health Service Partnership program.

In Moldova, only 41.7% of females aged 15-49 have access to modern family planning methods, reducing their reproductive health options. There are 116 Volunteers in Moldova working with their communities on projects in community economic development, English education, and health.

In Mongolia, 55% of young women face vulnerable employment, often working unpaid, subsistence jobs. Greater opportunity can be cultivated through education and economic empowerment. There are 141 Volunteers in Mongolia working with their communities on projects in English education, health, and youth development.



Morocco

Morocco

In Morocco, just 58% of females are literate compared to 76% of their male counterparts. Greater gender equality will help to decrease the disparity between men and women in literacy. There are 181 Volunteers in Morocco working with their communities on youth development projects.

In Mozambique, only 37% of adolescent females have comprehensive knowledge of HIV prevention. Lack of information puts Mozambican youth at risk in a country with an HIV rate of 12%. There are 218 Volunteers in Mozambique working with their communities on projects in education and health.

In Namibia, 19% of adolescent girls give birth to their first child before the age of 18. Early pregnancy takes girls out of school and can increase the risk of reproductive health issues.  There are 143 Volunteers in Namibia working with their communities on projects in community economic development, education, and health. 



Nepal

41% of women in Nepal are married before age 18. Early and/or forced marriage is a major factor impacting secondary school retention of adolescent girls. There are 70 Volunteers in Nepal working with their communities on agriculture projects.

Panama has one of the highest HIV rates in Latin America, but access to HIV testing, counselling, and treatment is extremely low. Worldwide, HIV disproportionately affects females. Lack of health education puts women and girls at even greater risk. There are 207 Volunteers in Panama working with their communities on projects in agriculture, English education, environmental conservation, and health.

In rural Peru, only 36% of girls graduate from secondary school. Completing secondary school is essential to developing healthy, thriving communities. There are 243 Volunteers in Peru working with their communities on projects in community economic development, the environment, health, and youth development. 



Rwanda

Rwanda

Just 62% of adolescent girls in Rwanda are literate. Adolescent girls need greater support in the home and school to successfully complete their education.  There are 138 Volunteers in Rwanda working with their communities on projects in education and health.

Over 60% of women in Samoa justify spousal domestic violence. With greater gender training and equality, Samoan communities will have the resources and support to improve this issue. There are 30 Volunteers in Samoa working with their communities on education projects.

Senegal is ranked 117 out of 127 countries on the “Education for All Index.” Only 27% of Senegalese girls are enrolled in secondary school. Completing secondary school is essential to develop healthy, thriving communities. There are 283 Volunteers in Senegal working with their communities on projects in agriculture, community economic development, the environment, and health.

Sierra Leone is recovering from the Ebola crisis which shut down school for the 2014-2015 school year, and the damage done on the education system during their 11 year civil war which ended in 2002. There are 10 Volunteers in Sierra Leone working with their communities on education projects.

South Africa

South Africa struggles to provide quality education and sufficient access to sanitation. These factors are essential to make school an inclusive environment for adolescent girls. For example, around 27% of South African public schools do not have access sufficient water. There are 143 Volunteers in South Africa working with their communities on projects in education and health.   



Swaziland

Swaziland

In Swaziland, 22% of women give birth to their first child before they reach age 18. Early pregnancy takes girls out of school; reducing career opportunities and overall lifetime earnings. There are 87 Volunteers in Swaziland working with their communities on projects in health and youth development.

76% of girls in Tanzania do not complete secondary school (in contrast with just 97% completion of primary school). Adolescent girls need greater support in the home and school to successfully transition to and complete secondary education. There are 216 Volunteers in Tanzania working with their communities on projects in agriculture, education, and health, including Volunteers in the Global Health Service Partnership program.

Thailand

In Thailand, just 4.2% of women are in managerial-level positions. Greater empowerment will lead to higher levels of female leadership in the public and private sectors. There are 103 Volunteers in Thailand working with their communities on projects in education and youth development.



Timor-Leste

In Timor-Leste, the contraceptive prevalence rate is just 22%, limiting women and girls reproductive health options. There are 20 Volunteers in Timor-Leste working with their communities on projects in community economic development.

Togo

Only 69% of Togolese adolescent females complete primary school. Lack of attendance is often due to insufficient funding for tuition, school supplies, and uniforms. There are 84 Volunteers in Togo working with their communities on projects in agriculture, education, and health.

Uganda

In Uganda, 20% of females enter early marriage and 33% of adolescent girls give birth by age 18. Reduction of barriers to education - whether social, structural, or cultural – will aid in greater female student retention. There are 166 Volunteers in Uganda working with their communities on projects in agriculture, English education, and health, including Volunteers in the Global Health Service Partnership program.

Vanuatu

Many ni-Vanuatu girls are unable to continue onto secondary school due to prohibitive school fees and lack of familial resources. There are 52 Volunteers in Vanuatu working with their communities on projects in education and health. 



Zambia Country Map

Zambia

In Zambia, only 35% of girls are enrolled in secondary school and dropout rates for girls are consistently higher than boys. This discrepancy is often due to the belief that it is not as important for adolescent girls to go to school as boys. There are 241 Volunteers in Zambia working with their communities on projects in agriculture, community economic development, education, the environment, and health.
