In this area, the intensity of the rains is so high that it causes large-scale erosion. This erosion control project—the lines of rocks you can see—was built to prevent the soil from washing away. Farmers here do not irrigate their land; all the water comes from rainfall (250 mm per year), which is very sporadic and intense (mostly during October and December).
