Return to Water in Africa

Water and Culture

by Megan Mann, Mapulanga, Zambia

Zambians often drink katubi during ceremonies. The villagers make it with water and millet. Every August, the chief has a celebration. The people will begin making katubi weeks beforehand in order to have enough for the party.

Water is also used in making art. One villager soaks his basket strips so they can be shaped and don't snap. Another woman uses water to make pottery. Both of these villagers are very talented.
