The size of Mali is greater than the combined area of Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. The south is predominantly savannah and is the most densely populated area of Mali. The steppe or Sahelian zone is a transitional area between the south and north. The Sahara lies in the north. The desert is populated by nomadic herdsmen, as well as by the Dogon people.
