Return to Water in Africa

This irrigation ditch is in western Madagascar, near Croisement Belo. It distributes water to rice paddies from the main canal several kilometers away. The tree in the background is a baobab. This type of tree has adapted itself to store water in its trunk and lose its leaves during the nine-month-long dry season.
