Transportation

by Katherine Whitman, Ker Cherno, The Gambia

I live about two kilometers from a tributary of the River Gambia. This tributary is used primarily for fishing but many also use it to reach the River Gambia. Small canoes are used as transportation on the tributary. When you reach the major river, you see many larger boats, as well as ships that come into port in Banjul.

When I travel to Banjul from my site, I must take a ferry. This ferry carries people as well as trucks and cars back and forth between Banjul and Bana. I have to be very careful on this ferry because there are many pickpockets and it is always so crowded.
