Recipe: Shopska Salad

Shopska salad is the most typical salad which Bulgarians prepare in every home and with which they welcome their guests. The salad is most popular when celebrating with a glass of rakiya and good spirits. Its name and origins are from the Shopska region—a particularly colorful area in western Bulgaria .

This Shopska salad recipe is part of a recipe book made with the financial support of the Peace Corps Partnership Program and with the coordination of returned Peace Corps Volunteer Angela An, who was a TEFL volunteer in Koprivshtitsa, Bulgaria. 

Materials & Procedures


  1. 1 -2 tomatoes
  2. ½ cucumber
  3. 1 raw or roasted red pepper
  4. 1 small onion


  1. Chop the ingredients and mix well.
  2. Top the salad with grated white brine cheese, and garnish with parsley.
