Recipe: Cream of Kumala Soup

Materials & Procedures


  1. 4 kumala (sweet potato)
  2. 8 c water
  3. 1/3 c butter
  4. ½ c tomato sauce
  5. 2 T milk
  6. 2 tsp. salt
  7. 1/8 tsp. pepper
  8. Dash thyme
  9. ½ c any kind of nuts, split


  1. Boil or bake kumala until soft.
  2. Peel away the skin, and put the kumala in a large bowl.
  3. Mash for 15 to 20 seconds; they should still be lumpy and not completely smooth.
  4. Spoon the mashed kumala into a sauce pan, heat, and add the rest of the ingredients.
  5. When the soup begins to boil, lower heat and simmer for about an hour.
  6. The nuts should be soft.
